Owning a home based business holds its own challenge far different than those of people who leave the house every day to go to a 9 to 5 job. In the corporate environment you have a boss or someone you must answer to, in your home based business you answer to yourself, so your daily operation must be done with efficiency.

If you have children at home with you there is an even more complicated element in your work at home tasks, they present more interruptions and means of moving off focus than for those that do not have these distractions. Not to mention the lack of space you might have with all their toys around to keep them occupied.

So how do you maintain the sanity?

Well the first thing you must do is find a place in your home that you can call your own. If the best you can do is the corner of the room that will do, it simply needs to be a place where you can have your computer and what’s necessary to dedicate yourself to your business.

Of course this not ideal, but if you have children at home this may be the best you can do during the day. I was never a stay at home mom when my children were small but I know from my many friends who are stay at home moms that they find it more productive to work while the kids are napping or after they have gone to bed at night. Ideally to achieve the most efficiency out of your available time you would want a place that is quite, where you can close the door and stay focused.

If all you give yourself is two to four hours a day of focused productive time you will see results in you home business. And the more of those results you see will give you the time you’re looking for as a home business owner. The freedom to go to the kid’s soccer game or be a parent helper at their school is after all a big reason why you have invested the time and effort to work from home.

Another way to maintain sanity in your daily home business tasks is to plan. Plan your day, schedule out the things that are the most important to be accomplished that day. Do only what you can handle and what will drive benefit for your business goals and get those done. You can purchase an inexpensive day planner at your local office supply store and check off each task as they have been complete. I do this everyday; I don’t know how people get along without them.

Balancing your work and your life is important for your success as a business person, as a spouse or parent and for your overall health.

As a home business owner you know that marketing is a fundamental to building your business opportunity. However this is where many new business opportunity owners fail, not knowing how to market on the internet.

We have all heard a lot about web 2.0 and social networking. But this is not for everyone. People who don’t have much computer skills, which could be a vast majority of the baby boomer generation, will fail at promoting their business in this manner.

So a good solution for the not so skilled home business owner is 2 step direct marketing. The method I will talk about here is with post cards, but there are many other ways to do this and others have used variations to this method with equally good results. As a matter of fact you see it all the time from the guru’s with free e-books, training CDs and the like. This is 2 step marketing.

So what do I mean by 2 step marketing? Simply put, 2 step marketing is based on giving something away for free, or low cost, with the hope of getting something back in return. In my example with post cards the process looks like this:

1. Create or have someone create a compelling post card giving just enough information about the product to get the prospect to take some sort of action. You want the post card to invoke curiosity not give away the information. Your post card can be selling anything. It does not have to be a hard product; it can be some informational product like training or coaching. Be creative…

2. You can have the prospect call a phone number for additional information; sent them to a website to get more information or have them send away for a package of additional information. The idea here is to get someone to raise their hand and say I’m interested in what you have by providing you with their personal details. These are great business opportunity prospects and an excellent way to build a list.

3. Once you have provided them with the requested information don’t stop there. If you haven’t heard this before “the money is in the follow-up” or “the money is in the list” both work here; the point is to continually follow up. If you don’t have an autoresponder, get one, this is the easiest way to follow up. The best two I know on the market are Aweber and GetResponse. Send them an email as often as necessary to create a relationship and remind them of your backend product. Don’t just do hard selling here, that is the quickest way to have your new prospect unsubscribe.

Mix your selling in with some marketing information. Your autoresponder should also be about building a relationship for the future.

2 step marketing is a time tested marketing method which has been used for years and will produce targeted prospects for your home based business.

If you want to make a lot of money, find a product that everybody wants and sell it. The trick here is finding the right product. Wouldn’t it be great if you could just sell other people’s products that have already been manufactured and proven?

Well you don’t have to look far with affiliate marketing. Becoming an affiliate marketer takes all the guess work out of selling a product. The products are proven in the industry and there are other marketers that have a track record of sales.

So how can you make huge profits with affiliate marketing?

This would put you in a great position to market to various companies that sell cookbooks, cookware and foods that go into preparation of the dishes. Add some content about the product and your own information on the subject. Create a link to the affiliate website and you’re done. You will never have to touch that site again.

Marketers using this strategy can get a site up and running in less than an hour. So if you have hundreds of these out on the web you can see how you can start pulling in huge profits.

Affiliate marketing is not a get rich quick business opportunity; it takes time to build your empire. But with a little hard work and very little expense you can see how this can develop into huge profits.

So how’s it been for you?

I have to say I have tried to use PLR articles on several occasions. And I must admit I have very mixed emotions about this tool.

It’s hard if you’re using article marketing as a tool in your home business opportunity strategy. I have often referred to myself as “super woman” but even I have writers block sometimes and get busy with life.

So having the ability to have someone help out is GREAT!! Or is it?

Well here are a few do’s and don’ts I have come up with that might help you along the way and can save you from making the same mistakes I and many others have.

Don’t believe them when they say it’s original.

Do use Copyscape to check the contents before you publish it to the internet.

Don’t believe it when they say you only have to change a few lines.

Do rewrite the entire document in your on words.

Don’t just use anyone’s work because it is cheep.

Do make sure you test their writing to make sure it is compatible to your style.

Don’t purchase articles on subjects you know nothing about.

Do check out content source. Don’t be embarrassed by publishing something under your name that is completely wrong.

So some of these may seem obvious but even the best of us can get caught by the don’ts when life gets busy and we need some help. But for the sake of your online career and the stress of not checking these things will bring….consider the do’s very carefully.

There are some very good PLR sources out there and most are reputable. Those that will not give you confirmation that what you are purchasing is original don’t waste anymore time with them. And make sure you start out with just a few articles, so you know if they fit your personal style.

There are many sources for acquiring articles:

Elance.com – Craigslist are two I have used. I have also tried students at my local university. And you can simply Google – Freelance Writers, Ghost Writers, Article Marketing Services and PLR articles.

I suggest even if you don’t need someone right now check a out a few sources. You don’t want to have a really bad experience when you do need someone.

And how much data do you request?

Ah, this is an age old question and one that comes up a lot in internet marketing circles. If you ask for too much you just get garbage. I hate that…. But if you don’t get enough it can limit the type of marketing you do for each prospect.

Can’t send paper to an email address!

So what is the right amount of information to request from your prospect? Do you know the answer?

That Depends! Sorry for the lame answer but it does and here’s why.

You want Quality…..

Our internet business depends on people and we want to provide the best for them right off the bat, so don’t irritate them by asking for too much information first thing. Go slow and you’ll get quality.

Now if your business requires that you get their name, address, city, zip, phone and email address in order to provide them with the product they are requesting then there is no conflict here and they are willing to provide. (By-the-way this is the gravy train, all the info you need to create great marketing campaigns).

However, if you’re simply providing an e-book not likely you’re going to get this info and if you make it a requirement you’re not going to get the real thing.

So if you need this information you should not hesitate to request it, if it’s not necessary at the time for what you are providing don’t ask.

Where should your Opt-In form reside?

Your opt-in form is used as a marketing tool. You are building a list with this tool so you should have it anywhere you are placing marketing material.

Your website home page – make it prominent and above he fold. (this is what is seen on the screen by the viewer)

Sub pages – give your prospect every opportunity to provide you there information. Location is not as important here but is should be obvious.

Your blog –not everyone uses or understands rss feeds, so providing your customers with many options for them to get your information is important. So provide them with a link to sign up for your newsletter on the front page of your blog. Again make sure it is above the fold.

Purchase confirmation –if you are selling a product and the customer has had a pleasant experience with the purchase they will be delighted to sign up for your business opportunity newsletter.

Landing pages –on of the most common ways to build a list. This is a page you create and place in front of an affiliate offer. Once information is entered you now have permission to continue email correspondence on the related topic.

Pop-up window –this is being heavily used with sales pages today. Before you exit or in a set interval while on the page. Most have only the offer and requested personal data. Since these windows are generally small it’s only requesting name and email address.

Email marketing –you can create a link in your email campaigns sending them to a squeeze page to sign up for your newsletter. Or the link, since you already have most of their information can simply verify and subscribe them to your newsletter.

Bottom line-get as much information as is appropriate and the prospect will provide. The more information you have the better you can market to them.
